All that glitters…

Raksha Bandhan is around the corner and it marks the onset of the festive season. Playing dress up becomes the method du jour in the festive season and we indulge in a lot of shopping – clothes & jewellery alike. After all correct accessorization is an integral part of every ensemble….a good mélange of accessories can spruce up even the dullest of outfits. These accessories are simply indispensable. Since times of yore, they have been a woman’s faithful companion. Be it a simple stud or a choker, ornaments have lifted our spirits, made us feel confident about ourselves and always completed our look.

Design and glamour with a subtle vintage undertone was the emerging trend at the just concluded jewellery week – be it the gorgeous bridal bib chokers, shoulder-grazing chandelier earrings, cocktail rings, cuffs, contemporary neckpieces, bracelets, chandbalis or the maharani haars. The myriad collections showcased trends that juxtaposed rustic inspiration with Victorian overtones and traditional designs with an international appeal. While gold, tinged with lively hues in fresh designs made waves on the ramp, uncuts, emeralds and polkis also made an impact. Jewellery studded with multi hued stones like agate, turquoise, ruby, emeralds and jade also ruled the ramp.

I have always been passionate about jewellery – “diamonds are definitely my best friend”. My passion for jewellery in fact took me to designing pieces and extend my creative canvas from designing just ensembles. Personally I love heirloom jewellery with a modern twist as I am a free-spirited traditionalist and I like to revamp the classic yet fall for the poise of an urbane feel. It’s just my classic yen for mixing the simple and the serious, the old and the new.

If you ask me to hand-pick some of the must haves for your personal collection diamond solitaire studs would top the list. They are not just versatile but are a perfect accessory for all age groups. These timeless pieces are very classy. In case you don’t want to burn a hole in your pocket then buy studs of different sizes depending upon your budget.

Another piece of adornment that fascinates me is the pearl. According to me, pearls are synonymous with elegance. If you want to add an extra feminine flair then you should go for pearl chokers, earrings or even simple pearl rings. In our country, ornaments are more than a piece you invest in or use for adorning your body. They have a sentimental value attached to them. My South Sea pearls have been passed on from generations and they are my prized possession.

When it comes to traditional jewellery, Nizami Jewellery is something I simply love & admire. They instantly transport you to the golden era. The uncut chand balis, jhumer, teeka, nath and tirmani are unique blends of fashion and tradition. If you are charmed by the grandeur of Nizami treasures then you should also invest in Polki jewellery this festive season.

You can also invest in necklaces, bangles, rings and chokers with coloured stones. The combination of Ruby and Emerald is a classic example of coloured stones doing wonders with traditional outfits.

One of my favourite accessories has to be my broaches. Broaches have the ability to bring even the most basic garments to life. The Chanel broaches remain my favourite.

Internationally the trends that intrigued me this season are Celine’s black lacquer cuff, Chanel’s slogan bracelets, Hermes’ bridle bracelet, Valentino’s ring, Stella McCartney’s chain, Fendi’s monogram cuff and Bailman’s choker. I also adore the collection of Graff, Cartier and Bvlgari. The trend that I love the most this season is the ear cuff. Celebs like Scarlet Johansson, Emma Watson, Rihanna were seen flaunting their dazzling ear cuffs. If you also want to embrace this trend then you should check Cartier’s and Graff’s collections.

My work demands me to travel all the time. Just like fashion, travelling never ceases to inspire me. It is important to carry the versatile pieces when you are on the move. My Cavalli necklace is an epitome of glamour. It is the first ornament I pack along with my Hermes cuff, Chanel earrings and gold hoops.

So pick what you think is right for you. You can carry the latest trends with panache or take out the befitting jewels from your treasure!
